Reflection: Experience & Insight

18/02/21

As part of the T&L unit, I’m teaching on the MA Narrative Environments course (a 2-year MA programme) at CSM. Upon being first informed of this, I was intrigued to find out what exactly is ‘Narrative Environments’ and what is its purpose? I had the opportunity to guest tutor the 1st years project presentation back in October (2020), an opportunity that gave me a practical preview into what the MA course entails and a glimpse into the world of narrative environments.

Months later, I’ve been involved in both the 1st and 2nd year’s programmes; tutoring students, providing insight and knowledge via both my creative/entrepreneurial practices whilst applying my teaching practice and context. My first BIG CRITS session (for Y2 MA students) was productive and insightful; the students received critical analysis and feedback from myself and fellow critics and pointed out that they found it constructive, which is one the major things an educator wants to hear.
Similarly, I had my first solo tutorial session with the Y2 students and the experience was incredibly rewarding. I was able to not just impart knowledge, but gain understanding through their way of understanding and their manner of questioning. It felt like a conversation and discussion, rather than me giving and them receiving. It was circular and holistic; both parties (student and educator) receiving and gaining from one another. A truly beautiful experience.

It is early days, but I am thrilled, enthused, eager, focused, and yearning to learn more, experience more, gain more, and ultimately, give more.

Speak soon.
